Infrared transmitter and receiver
To transmit and receive infrared signals your Mac needs an external USB device - some Macs do have infrared ports which are not suitable for remote control signals, unfortunately.
iRed supports the IRTrans, a very powerful device with excellent transmission and reception capabilities. So the IRTrans is able to receive weak signals very reliably - even in "blind corner locations". With direct visibility the IRTrans may transmit up to 50 feet.
