FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

On this page you find a growing list of questions users of iRed have asked before. Please write to ired@filewell.com, and maybe your question will appear on this page as well ;-)

q
iRed "echoes" IR codes, e.g. if I send "Next Track" to iRed it will repeat this command and so my HiFi does "Next Track" twice?!.
a
Please make sure that you don't have a trigger enabled which waits for "Next Track" and reacts by sending "Next Track".
You don't need to set a trigger unless you want to control the mac from remote or "translate" an IR code.

q
Sometimes iRed may hang some seconds when you click a VRC button.
a
This is a known problem and seems to be related to Dual processor Macs only. This problem was fixed with version 1.3. Please download a current version.

q
Some VRC buttons have a repeating function and some not. How could I enable this?
a
Switch to the "Edit" mode, choose the button in question and click "Inspector" or press -I. On the inspector window toggle the switch labeled Button sends repeatedly.

q
VRC buttons with repeating function only send codes five times!?
a
This is a security measure. The limit of 5 is built-in to prevent from unintentional sending codes too often which could lead to a damage of AV components, e.g. with a destructive sound volume.

If you really want to send codes, say, 10 times, you may assign any code to one button as often as you want on the inspector window.

q
When I am creating a new VRC and have to learn 20 infrared codes to the buttons, it is a little bit tedious to use the learning panel again and again. Is there a quicker way to achieve this?
a
As a shortcut for Power User it is possible to work around the learning panel. For this to work nicely it is recommended to assign the titles of all buttons of a VRC first. Then open the learning panel once to check the correct name of the RC - this one will be used in the following steps automatically. After this you may Shift-Click the "Learn IR-Code..." and the learning starts immediately without showing the learning panel. The description of the IR codes will be taken from the VRC button's titles.

q
Problem: Syntax checking or performing AppleScripts sometimes fails, alas the code is correct!
a
Unfortunately there is a problem with AppleScript and applications, which are not started, when the script is to be performed or syntax-checked. This very problem arises with Apple's ScriptEditor application as well, so it seems to be not iRed's fault.
Nevertheless we are working on this problem.

Workaround: Start the targeted application before iRed.
